Flat Rock Business Review 2015

January 4, 2016 By Joe Pagano

DIA Inside|Out 2015
DIA Inside|Out 2015

A lot has positive changed happened in 2015. In the mayors 2015 state of the city address in February 2015 to the city council and citizens of Flat Rock he confirmed that Meijer would start their construction at Vreeland and Telegraph. He also announced that Calder’s Dairy store and processing will be in the old Heir Lumber on Telegraph. The mayor also did a ribbon cutting on two new restaurants, Leo’s Coney Island in February and Fiesta Grande in May, both on North Telegraph road.

Still to come on telegraph are O’Reilly’s Auto , Bigby Coffee and Captain Nemo’s.

Also opening in 2016 will be the aforementioned Meijer. They expect to open in before summer.

The DDA is also involved with some physical improvements to the Telegraph Road corridor. At the southern end of Telegraph the New Streetscape has gone in from the bridge to Atwater. Over the next few years they will be moving north to the railroad viaduct along with Gibraltar and W. Huron River. Also on Telegraph the DDA has funded for improved lighting on Telegraph Road starting on the north side of the viaduct. They are currently in Phase 1 and 2 in which DTE will install new LED lighting from the viaduct to Vreeland Road. The project is currently working and is expected to be completed by March 2016. In 2016 the DDA is slated to fund the section from Vreeland to Matilda and possibly to the northern city limits.

In 2015 some of the other activities that took place were the removal of the old Post Office on Arsenal Road behind Frost and Remer. Kaledico moved into a new/larger building, the former Sergeant Chiropractor office on W. Huron River, to help support its business along with supporting students interested in creative workspace designed for startups, nonprofits, and freelance creative to find inspiration and work in and around the Kaleidico.

The Flat Rock Our Home Town in cooperation with the Flat Rock DDA and TIFFA ran two projects including the DIA inside|out program where the DIA brought in 3 paintings for display in the Downtown area and the Christmas Passports where shoppers could win cash (Flat Rock Busks) for just shopping in Flat Rock.

WELCOME TO FLAT ROCK

The first Euro-American settlers in Flat Rock were Michael Vreeland and his five grown sons between 1811 and 1820. Michael had been captured by British Rangers during the Revolutionary War and released after American independence.

The family purchased 800 acres (3.2 km2). The town was called the Village of Vreeland until 1838 when the Vreeland family sold off the majority of the land and relinquished control of the area. The Vreeland families built the first grain and lumber mill, having brought the grinding stones from New York.

Descendants of Michael Vreeland still live in the town and attend Flat Rock public schools, being the seventh generation to reside in the town their family founded.
