Full 2022 September Weekend in Downtown Flat Rock

September 7, 2022 By Joe Pagano

Starting Thursday September 8th, the Downriver Community Band will be performing a makeup performance at HuRoc Park.  They will start at 6:30pm and end at 8pm.

The Downriver Community Band (DCB), founded in 1989, is a volunteer group of adult musicians who play wind and percussion instruments. The DCB’s mission is to give non-professional adult musicians a dynamic and enriching opportunity to perform, positively contribute to the cultural environment of the Downriver area and perform in a venue that allows and encourages personal musical expression and growth. Our group is comprised of players with various musicianship levels. Members come from all walks of life.

Although our focus is on local venues and rehearsal spaces to support our musical palette, the group has participated in several road trips. We have been invited to partake in state festivals like The Motor City Festival of Bands. Many of our members have represented the band in New York City in 2019 for the Association of Concert Bands (ACB) Annual National Convention, as well as Hawaii for both the 70th & 75th anniversaries commemorating of the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

As a concert band, we enjoy performing a wide variety of light and popular tunes transcribed or arranged for wind ensembles. Our programs consist of marches, big band, classical, jazz, show tunes, contemporary and original musical compositions.

This weekend also brings the Flat Rock Historical Society Rummage Sale.  That will take place at the Historical Village at 25486 Gibraltar Road behind the library.  The sale runs Friday and Saturday September 9-10th from, 9am-4pm.

WELCOME TO FLAT ROCK

The first Euro-American settlers in Flat Rock were Michael Vreeland and his five grown sons between 1811 and 1820. Michael had been captured by British Rangers during the Revolutionary War and released after American independence.

The family purchased 800 acres (3.2 km2). The town was called the Village of Vreeland until 1838 when the Vreeland family sold off the majority of the land and relinquished control of the area. The Vreeland families built the first grain and lumber mill, having brought the grinding stones from New York.

Descendants of Michael Vreeland still live in the town and attend Flat Rock public schools, being the seventh generation to reside in the town their family founded.
