BYOB THIS WEEKS RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK.

March 5, 2021 By Joe Pagano

BYOB — 26068 Huron River Drive, Flat Rock, MI 48134
This week, our Restaurant of the Week is Build Your Own Burrito, B.Y.O.B..
B.Y.O.B stands as one of our favorite family-owned businesses in Flat Rock. Opening their doors three years ago, B.Y.O.B is an easy choice for your burrito and Tex Mex needs. The team at B.Y.O.B has always felt connected to their hometown, often relying on the support of the entire Flat Rock community. For as much as they feel supported, they aim to send this appreciation back in every way they can. B.Y.O.B has supported our Flat Rock football team through sponsorships and donations, as well as supported Flat Rock High School homecoming events and other festivals. The support of Flat Rock Schools is how B.Y.O.B aims to make their mark on the community.
With the many changes that have come with the coronavirus pandemic, B.Y.O.B has relied completely on curbside service. This loss of income has heavily impacted the way in which they run their business, forever changing the normalcy of in-person dining. The team at B.Y.O.B hope you might choose to visit them for you next curbside pickup!

Featured Restaurants – Leo’s Coney Island

February 8, 2021 By Joe Pagano

Leo’s Coney Island – Flat Rock Michigan

Leo’s Coney Island is located at 26988 Telegraph Rd, Flat Rock, MI 48134. Leo’s is located in the CVS plaza at the intersection of Telegraph and Vreeland and owned by Hass Shami and family.

The Shami family has been in business at Leo’s Coney Island Flat Rock for 5 years.  They have been active supporters of Flat Rock events since opening the restaurant in 2016.  Leo’s has participated in the Taste of Flat Rock, Flat Rock Passport Program and have supported schools with donations.  They actively supported the Summerblast and Riverfest festivals, providing food entrées at the VIP tent.  Additionally, all first responders, firefighters and police receive discounts.  As with many of our restaurants, COVID has affected their daily operations, all orders are takeout only or during openings, the restaurant was limited to 25% occupancy.  Employees have taken the limited service especially hard as servers were either not needed or reduced as were the cooks.  Community support during this time period is appreciated, orders can be ordered and delivered thru DoorDash, GrubHub, Menufy and UberEats or ordered for carry out at 734-789-7757. What they would really appreciate is shout outs on social media, sharing pictures and support from the community.

Featured Restaurants – Michael’s On the River

January 27, 2021 By Joe Pagano

Flat Rock Our Hometown and the Downtown Development Authority will be featuring a Flat Rock Restaurant weekly for the next 10 weeks- The stories will be written by our members.

This week we are Featuring “Michael’s On the River”

Michael’s On the River has long been a favorite on our little section of Telegraph Rd. As a member of the Flat Rock community for 22 years, Michael’s has always been the perfect place to grab some delicious food and a cold drink.

For as much as we love them, the team at Michael’s has always given back the same appreciation to their cherished community. Michael’s On the River has sponsored our Flat Rock football team, supported our Rotary Club, and participated in the Christmas passport program. Beyond this, they have been very generous in food donations, feeding the staff at our annual Flat Rock River-Fest.

Through this very difficult year, Michael’s has seen about an 80% decrease in their normal business. Michael’s On The River, like many restaurants, has faced one of the most challenging years to date.

To show how much we all love Michael’s, we hope you might choose them for your next takeout night!

Dining room currently closed · Take out available.

Leo’s Coney Island is FROH October 2020 Featured Business

October 3, 2020 By Joe Pagano

Flat Rock Our Hometowns featured business for October is Leo’s Coney Island.
These restaurant owners have a long history of family tradition. Sam and Moe opened their first Leo’s Coney Island in 2011 in Belleville. Moe had been in the restaurant business for 30 years and decided it was good time for he and his brother to start their own.
With great success at their first effort, they opened their second location in Flat Rock in 2015. Quickly after, Sam’s son, Ali, came in to help run the business. Not long after, the youngest son, Hassan, started dish washing at the restaurant. At this point, the restaurant was largely staffed by family. Working long hours and managing two locations, all of their hard work was paying off. The business was growing and customers were continually coming in. This is what Flat Rock is all about: grit, family, and community. That being said, it is not all a family affair. Their manager, Chiara, has been with them since day one. Keith, the restaurant manager, has been in the Leo Coney Island family for a long time. Most of their staff has been with Sam and Moe for years.
Now in 2020, Hassan is running the Flat Rock Leo’s location. His hard work led him to grow and run the business. Hassan said he really loves the community here in Flat Rock. He loves seeing the same happy faces. Hassan admitted he has customers who give him constructive criticism, but he likes the feedback. He wants the restaurant to always be better and the customers to be happy.
If you haven’t been to Leo’s, please do pay them a visit. They’d love to have you try all that they have to offer.
They even have a wonderful Mediterranean menu, complete with homemade hummus, fattoush, and shawarma sandwiches.
If you mention you read this article, Leo’s will you give 10% off your order of $30 or more!
Leo’s Coney Island Flat Rock hours of operation are:
Monday-Sunday: 7:00 am-9:00pm
26988 Telegraph Road
Flat Rock, MI 48134

WELCOME TO FLAT ROCK

The first Euro-American settlers in Flat Rock were Michael Vreeland and his five grown sons between 1811 and 1820. Michael had been captured by British Rangers during the Revolutionary War and released after American independence.

The family purchased 800 acres (3.2 km2). The town was called the Village of Vreeland until 1838 when the Vreeland family sold off the majority of the land and relinquished control of the area. The Vreeland families built the first grain and lumber mill, having brought the grinding stones from New York.

Descendants of Michael Vreeland still live in the town and attend Flat Rock public schools, being the seventh generation to reside in the town their family founded.
