Kate’s Kitchen IS THIS WEEKS RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK

April 5, 2021 By Joe Pagano

Kate’s Kitchen Flat Rick Michigan

Kate’s Kitchen is one of Flat Rock Hometown Businesses.  Kate’s started their business in the basement of their home.  Their current location was a former sandwich shop serving customers of the Ford Lamp Plant, now Flat Rock Metal.

Word of Catherine Gillespie’s pies traveled fast.

Catherine and her husband Aaron opened Kates Kitchen at 26558 West Huron River Road in 1978.  Today the business has been passed down to their granddaughter also named Catherine.  The Gillespie family has been involved in the Flat Rock community for generations.

When COVID hit it had a negative impact on Kates Kitchen as it has to all restaurants.  They have been doing carry out business from their menu including pies to help pay the bills.  Catherine said that she will do everything in her power to keep their family business going.  They are currently open for indoor dining following the governors orders.  Kates are is open for breakfast and brunch currently Thursday through Sunday and of course they are open to pick up your favorite pie.

Kate’s current Hours are 7am to 2pm Thursday through Sunday and they may be reached at 734-782-3909.

Featured Restaurants – Fiorelli’s Restaurant Collection

March 22, 2021 By Joe Pagano

Fiorelli’s Restaurant Collection – Flat Rock, Mi.

Flat Rock is known for its wonderful collection of restaurants at Fiorelli’s, standing as a favorite of our community for 40 years.  All of us have been going to Fiorelli’s for longer than we can remember – and the team at gives back the same love and appreciation to our community. Fiorelli’s Restaurant Collection has donated and supported our Flat Rock Schools, various local charities, our annual events, our frontline hospital workers, as well as the Flat Rock fire and police departments. Much of this support has been prioritized by Fiorelli’s since the pandemic began.

As COVID-19 has impacted all of us, Fiorelli’s has seen a dramatic change in their normal business operations. Fiorelli’s Restaurant Collection has always been a sit-down restaurant for many, with only 10% of their sales coming from carryout. As a result, the restaurants are now down in regular business by 90%. Despite these challenges, Fiorelli’s Restaurant Collection has been fiercely committed to keeping on all of their full-time staff. To help Fiorelli’s continue to be the community staple that it has become, we hope you will continue to patronize their restaurants and buy gift certificates for family and friends!

CHINA HOUSE IS THIS WEEKS RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK

March 22, 2021 By Joe Pagano

Our Restaurant of the Week is China House, the only Chinese Restaurant in town

The Shi family has been in business at China House in Flat Rock for the past 15 years.  Standing as the only restaurant in Flat Rock serving delicious Chinese cuisine, they are a favorite spot for many of us! Over the past year, they have been able to keep up a steady flow of takeout business during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The team at China House has been committed to remaining open to the public during these difficult times. Their dining room has been closed since March of 2020 and have relied on carryout exclusively, working to ensure the safety of their community. While take-out has always been a major part of their business, the Shi Family has also had reduced employees while they are not open for in-person dining. Community support during this time period is sincerely appreciated by everyone at China House. The next time you are thinking about getting some delicious Chinese takeout, we hope you will order from China House!

BYOB THIS WEEKS RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK.

March 5, 2021 By Joe Pagano

BYOB — 26068 Huron River Drive, Flat Rock, MI 48134
This week, our Restaurant of the Week is Build Your Own Burrito, B.Y.O.B..
B.Y.O.B stands as one of our favorite family-owned businesses in Flat Rock. Opening their doors three years ago, B.Y.O.B is an easy choice for your burrito and Tex Mex needs. The team at B.Y.O.B has always felt connected to their hometown, often relying on the support of the entire Flat Rock community. For as much as they feel supported, they aim to send this appreciation back in every way they can. B.Y.O.B has supported our Flat Rock football team through sponsorships and donations, as well as supported Flat Rock High School homecoming events and other festivals. The support of Flat Rock Schools is how B.Y.O.B aims to make their mark on the community.
With the many changes that have come with the coronavirus pandemic, B.Y.O.B has relied completely on curbside service. This loss of income has heavily impacted the way in which they run their business, forever changing the normalcy of in-person dining. The team at B.Y.O.B hope you might choose to visit them for you next curbside pickup!

WELCOME TO FLAT ROCK

The first Euro-American settlers in Flat Rock were Michael Vreeland and his five grown sons between 1811 and 1820. Michael had been captured by British Rangers during the Revolutionary War and released after American independence.

The family purchased 800 acres (3.2 km2). The town was called the Village of Vreeland until 1838 when the Vreeland family sold off the majority of the land and relinquished control of the area. The Vreeland families built the first grain and lumber mill, having brought the grinding stones from New York.

Descendants of Michael Vreeland still live in the town and attend Flat Rock public schools, being the seventh generation to reside in the town their family founded.
