August 22, 2016 By Joe Pagano

Great ClipsDetroit Honored for Major Business Milestone

Local Couple Celebrates Opening of 4,000th Great Clips Hair Salon

Investing in the Economy and the Hometown they love!

In the 2009 recession, Detroit native Brian Czopek lost his job as a marketing manager in the auto industry. At the same time, his wife, Christie, a Spanish teacher in the St. Clair Shores school district, was ready to try something new. They were born and raised in the Detroit suburbs and, despite the downturn, wanted to invest in the economy to create jobs and opportunity for themselves and others. The couple took a radical turn from their previous careers and made a bold move to open a Great Clips hair salon. Today, six years later, they own four salons with a fifth on the way, and they’re earning themselves and Detroit national recognition for opening the 4,000th Great Clips salon.

“We’re excited and proud to be part of the growing Great Clips family and we’re so honored to open the 4,000th salon,” says Brian, who got another management job with the auto industry while his wife Christie runs the salons. “We wanted to take control of our future while at the same time investing in the community we love so much. We believe in Detroit and we wanted to take part in the city’s resurgence. We knew in some small way we could give back by opening this business and offering people great, convenient haircuts at an affordable price.”

WELCOME TO FLAT ROCK

The first Euro-American settlers in Flat Rock were Michael Vreeland and his five grown sons between 1811 and 1820. Michael had been captured by British Rangers during the Revolutionary War and released after American independence.

The family purchased 800 acres (3.2 km2). The town was called the Village of Vreeland until 1838 when the Vreeland family sold off the majority of the land and relinquished control of the area. The Vreeland families built the first grain and lumber mill, having brought the grinding stones from New York.

Descendants of Michael Vreeland still live in the town and attend Flat Rock public schools, being the seventh generation to reside in the town their family founded.
