June 19, 2012 By Downtown Flat Rock

Mark Greenhouse

The Flat Rock Farmers Market has expanded this year according to the 2012 Market manager Monica Landry.  Monica is working through Mr. Bean’s Treatery and has added a new twist to this year’s market.  The market will also include an Artiest Market.  The Flat Rock Downtown District Authority will sponsor the market again this year.  Monica said there will be a dozen or more vendors this Saturday with even more expected.  The Flat Rock DDA has once again approved the site across from Huroc Park on Arsenal Road.  This year’s hours will be from 9 AM to 3 PM and will remain on Saturday.  This year’s market will also be open for the Riverfest Celebration Sept. 15th and Sunday Sept 16th.  The market will also include children’s activities.  We will be posting activities and the list of vendors on this site.  We are also creating a new facebook page specifically for the Flat Rock Market.  We are also looking for local businesses who want to set up a booth.  For questions or more information you can send an email request to flatrockmarket.com@gmail.com,  We hope to see you this Saturday and every Saturday at Huroc Park .

WELCOME TO FLAT ROCK

The first Euro-American settlers in Flat Rock were Michael Vreeland and his five grown sons between 1811 and 1820. Michael had been captured by British Rangers during the Revolutionary War and released after American independence.

The family purchased 800 acres (3.2 km2). The town was called the Village of Vreeland until 1838 when the Vreeland family sold off the majority of the land and relinquished control of the area. The Vreeland families built the first grain and lumber mill, having brought the grinding stones from New York.

Descendants of Michael Vreeland still live in the town and attend Flat Rock public schools, being the seventh generation to reside in the town their family founded.
