Flat Rock Riverfest Benefits Community Schools

City Councilman Gary Borden, Chairman of the Flat Rock Riverfest Committee, just presented Flat Rock Community Schools with a check for $664.80–money generated from the successful event in mid-September.

Riverfest was held at Huroc Park, returning for the second time since a decade-long absence previous to 2011. Owing to public interest in last year’s event, the event expanded to a full second day this year–and the activities and musical acts expanded with it.

The festival was headlined by Bo Bice–American Idol runner-up–and featured a wide range of live musical talent from country, to jazz, to rock ‘n’ roll. In addition, Riverfest-goers enjoyed a parade, boxing demonstrations, a dunk tank, monster truck rides, a petting zoo and, of course, some great food.

Councilman Borden took the check-presenting opportunity to thank the Community Schools for all of their hard work, support, and volunteerism for Riverfest. Borden said the close collaboration helped to bring a great event to a great community and showcased what a fantastic place Flat Rock is to live, work, and raise families.

On hand to receive the check during the presentation was Flat Rock Community Schools Superintendent Joanie Donaldson and Board President Norm Haase. Riverfest’s main sponsors were the Flat Rock Community Foundation and Ford Motor Company. An announcement on next year’s event–Flat Rock Riverfest 2013–is planned soon.

WELCOME TO FLAT ROCK

The first Euro-American settlers in Flat Rock were Michael Vreeland and his five grown sons between 1811 and 1820. Michael had been captured by British Rangers during the Revolutionary War and released after American independence.

The family purchased 800 acres (3.2 km2). The town was called the Village of Vreeland until 1838 when the Vreeland family sold off the majority of the land and relinquished control of the area. The Vreeland families built the first grain and lumber mill, having brought the grinding stones from New York.

Descendants of Michael Vreeland still live in the town and attend Flat Rock public schools, being the seventh generation to reside in the town their family founded.
