3rd Annual Historic Cemetery Walk

October 14, 2019 By Joe Pagano

Once again this year The Flat Rock Historical Society along with Brownstown and Huron Township bring you the annual Cemetery Walk.  Join us for this 3rd annual historic journey into the past on October 19th from 5 – 11 PM. There are some exciting new activities this year! All the historical campus activities can be enjoyed before or after the cemetery walk, with the exception of the warming center which will only be available following your tour.
There is a new cemetery to visit this year! When it’s time for your tour, you’ll take a short bus ride to the final resting place for some of the beloved residents that once lived and worked in this area. Our characters have very interesting stories to share with you!
You are invited to explore the grounds of Flat Rock Historical Campus, where you can visit the House of Mourning and familiarize yourself with customs once observed. Join us at the Warming Center for Cider & Donuts following your tour and be sure to get in on the raffle for all the wonderful baskets donated by our local merchants.
Check out the the Munger Store to learn about paranormal activities from professional ghost hunters and visit our gift shop. Tarot card readers will be available in Smith Hotel for those interested in a mini reading.
And you won’t want to miss the new “Society Speakeasy” located in the front of Smith Hotel. Join your freinds for beer, wine or one of the special cocktails enjoyed by many in the old “speakeasy” days. (Two drink maximum. Must be 21 with proper ID to enter and consume alcoholic beverages. Society Speakeasy tickets best purchased in advance. Limited on-site sales.)
If you pre-order an event t-shirt, it will be available for pick up at the end of the evening at the Warming Center. Please plan on arriving 30 minutes prior to your tour time so you have time to explore the campus. The evening activities will take a minimum of 2 hours.
Proceeds from the event will benefit local historic cemetery restoration and educational history programs.

WELCOME TO FLAT ROCK

The first Euro-American settlers in Flat Rock were Michael Vreeland and his five grown sons between 1811 and 1820. Michael had been captured by British Rangers during the Revolutionary War and released after American independence.

The family purchased 800 acres (3.2 km2). The town was called the Village of Vreeland until 1838 when the Vreeland family sold off the majority of the land and relinquished control of the area. The Vreeland families built the first grain and lumber mill, having brought the grinding stones from New York.

Descendants of Michael Vreeland still live in the town and attend Flat Rock public schools, being the seventh generation to reside in the town their family founded.
