Rain on our “Car Show” – Saturday, May 14th

April 25, 2011 By Downtown Flat Rock

It was a soggy Saturday but there were some who braved the rain and brought their cars and those who came and saw them.

The Second Annual Wheels and Deals was almost a wash.  The Flat Rock DDA Sponsored Event brought out about a dozen Classic Cars.  Davy G was on the music and Big Boy with the food.  Also one of the local businesses Braved the Rain, Salon Europa was giving out discounts and certificates for a chance to win a free hair cut.  One of the spokesmen from the Classic Car group said that last Mondays night show at Big Boy brought out about 170 cars and that if the weather would have cooperated today we would have over 200 cars for this annual event.  Despite the weather, the Flat Rock DDA did give out a few cash prizes for “Braving The Rain” and the “Most Unusual” Cars.

WELCOME TO FLAT ROCK

The first Euro-American settlers in Flat Rock were Michael Vreeland and his five grown sons between 1811 and 1820. Michael had been captured by British Rangers during the Revolutionary War and released after American independence.

The family purchased 800 acres (3.2 km2). The town was called the Village of Vreeland until 1838 when the Vreeland family sold off the majority of the land and relinquished control of the area. The Vreeland families built the first grain and lumber mill, having brought the grinding stones from New York.

Descendants of Michael Vreeland still live in the town and attend Flat Rock public schools, being the seventh generation to reside in the town their family founded.
