Trick of Treat, Walkable Tour & More in Downtown Flat Rock

October 25, 2012 By Joe Pagano

Flat Rock Business District

This Saturday October 27, 2012, the businesses in the Downtown area are sponsoring activities for the kids and adults.  Children’s activities include a hayride, costume contests, trick or treating and much more.  For the children and adults or children at heart, the activities include music, cider and donuts, the last weekend of the framers market and a walkable tour of current and a future look of the downtown area.  You can walk the area and talk to businesses owners about your ideas of what a viable downtown could look like.  Don Townsend, owner of “Mr. Bean’s Treatery” has a display of a new look for store fronts and has contacted the owners of businesses who will be opening in the near future.  Please see the attached flyer for more information about this event including both the children’s and adult events.

WELCOME TO FLAT ROCK

The first Euro-American settlers in Flat Rock were Michael Vreeland and his five grown sons between 1811 and 1820. Michael had been captured by British Rangers during the Revolutionary War and released after American independence.

The family purchased 800 acres (3.2 km2). The town was called the Village of Vreeland until 1838 when the Vreeland family sold off the majority of the land and relinquished control of the area. The Vreeland families built the first grain and lumber mill, having brought the grinding stones from New York.

Descendants of Michael Vreeland still live in the town and attend Flat Rock public schools, being the seventh generation to reside in the town their family founded.
