Kate’s Kitchen Flat Rock November 2018’s Featured Business

November 3, 2018 By Joe Pagano

Kate’s Kitchen Flat Rock, Mi.

Kate’s Kitchen’s is Our Hometown Flat Rocks Featured Business for November 2018. From its humble beginning Kate’s Kitchen started just a few blocks from the restaurant’s present location, in a basement on Arsenal Road in Flat Rock.

You can get Kate’s Famous Pies during Business Hours.

Word of Catherine Gillespie’s pies traveled fast, and in 1979 she and her husband Aaron opened Kate’s Kitchen at 26558 W. Huron River Drive in Flat Rock. Pies were what got them started, breakfast fare was soon to follow.

Fast forward to 1997, the business was passed down to their daughter, also named Catherine, who is the present owner. Since then, with the help of a group of talented and devoted women including Becky, Gina and Catherine’s daughter, Alexis, have kept the tradition of quality and homemade comfort food alive.

WELCOME TO FLAT ROCK

The first Euro-American settlers in Flat Rock were Michael Vreeland and his five grown sons between 1811 and 1820. Michael had been captured by British Rangers during the Revolutionary War and released after American independence.

The family purchased 800 acres (3.2 km2). The town was called the Village of Vreeland until 1838 when the Vreeland family sold off the majority of the land and relinquished control of the area. The Vreeland families built the first grain and lumber mill, having brought the grinding stones from New York.

Descendants of Michael Vreeland still live in the town and attend Flat Rock public schools, being the seventh generation to reside in the town their family founded.
