Flat Rock’s Mayor Jonathan Dropiewski’s address may have been over shadowed by the President’s State of the Union Address and the Governor’s State of the State Address but to those who live in the city it is just as important and like the other two speeches can impact those in Flat Rock even more. To highlight Mayor Dropiewski’s 2014 address, he talking about the changes on city council including the late Gary Borden along with the changes of department heads last year. He also talked about contributions by the Boy Scouts and other volunteer citizens in Flat Rock.

As for this year, 2015, he talked about improving city services and looking forward to things like the calibration of Flat Rock’s 50th anniversary as a city. Mr. Mayor also talked about looking forward to new businesses scheduled to open or start this year including a new Mexican restaurant, a new Coney Island more businesses in the Flat Rock Plaza, formally Flat Rock Plaza and Meijer. He also announced that Monroe’s Calder’s Dairy including a store front is  going into the old lumber shop on Telegraph.

WELCOME TO FLAT ROCK

The first Euro-American settlers in Flat Rock were Michael Vreeland and his five grown sons between 1811 and 1820. Michael had been captured by British Rangers during the Revolutionary War and released after American independence.

The family purchased 800 acres (3.2 km2). The town was called the Village of Vreeland until 1838 when the Vreeland family sold off the majority of the land and relinquished control of the area. The Vreeland families built the first grain and lumber mill, having brought the grinding stones from New York.

Descendants of Michael Vreeland still live in the town and attend Flat Rock public schools, being the seventh generation to reside in the town their family founded.
