Red Cross Swim Lessons

Help teach your kids how to swim by signing them up for Red Cross swim lessons. Ten different classes will be available to teach kids from one to 16 how to swim, or improve their swimming. Classes start October 22nd and run till December 14th.swimming lessons

The Parent and Tot class is available for one to three year olds. It will be held on Saturdays from 12pm to 12:30pm. This class will help toddlers begin to adjust to the water and learn basic techniques. An adult must be with a child at all times. Children must wear swim diapers and vinyl pants at all times.

For children ages four and five, there are three different classes they can take.

Preschool One is held on Saturdays from 9am to 9:45am. This class will teach children how to swim with floaties, and to be comfortable swimming without their parents.

Preschool Two will run from 10am to 10:45am on Saturdays. Any swimmer who can submerge their faces are encouraged to join this class. Children should be able to swim on their own, with or without floaties.

Preschool Three is for children who can submerge their faces and swim without the use of floaties. This class will run from 11am to 11:45am on Saturdays.

For children age six to 16, there are six different classes available.

    • 4:30pm to 5:15pm
    • Introduction to water skills
  • Level 2
    • Tuesdays
    • 4:30pm to 5:15pm
    • Fundamental aquatic skills
  • Level 3
    • Wednesdays
    • 5:30pm to 6:15pm
    • Stroke development in deep water
  • Level 4
    • Tuesdays
    • 5:30pm to 6:15pm
    • Stroke improvement
  • Level 5
    • Thursdays
    • 4:30pm to 5:30pm
    • Further coordination, refinement of strokes, introduction to flips
  • Level 6
    • Thursdays
    • 5:30pm to 6:30pm
    • Work on increasing speed, technique, starts, flips breathing
      • **Children must be able to swim 50 freestyle strokes and 50 of another stroke**

All classes cost $48 for Flat Rock residents and $58 for non-residents

WELCOME TO FLAT ROCK

The first Euro-American settlers in Flat Rock were Michael Vreeland and his five grown sons between 1811 and 1820. Michael had been captured by British Rangers during the Revolutionary War and released after American independence.

The family purchased 800 acres (3.2 km2). The town was called the Village of Vreeland until 1838 when the Vreeland family sold off the majority of the land and relinquished control of the area. The Vreeland families built the first grain and lumber mill, having brought the grinding stones from New York.

Descendants of Michael Vreeland still live in the town and attend Flat Rock public schools, being the seventh generation to reside in the town their family founded.
