Jim’s Butcher Shop
Flat Rock Michigan

Jim’s Butcher Shop has been the butcher in Flat Rock since 1974. The former Flat Rock Party Store located at 28418 Telegraph was built as a modern Kroger store in March of 1948. The store operated as Kroger, Danny’s Food of Monroe, Grubber’s, and then Foodtown until 1974 when it changed hands and became Flat Rock Party Store. In 1974, Jim, offered his butcher skills to Flat Rock Party Store and a few years later added Jim’s Butcher Shop to the store name.

Jim’s Butcher Shop is one of the few mom and pop grocery stores left in the area. It is the quintessential mom and pop store. Jim’s name is on the building, but it is a family operation. His wife Lynn works alongside Jim. Their 3 children, Darin, Jamie and Stacy grew up in the store. Their grandchildren are now working there. In fact, a lot of family works at Jim’s, Lana, Lynn’s sister has been at Jim’s for 35 years. Stacy their youngest child ran the register at age 4, she had to stand on a milk crate to reach the cash register, but she wasn’t going to be left out of day to day operations. Now Stacy is co-owner. Jim’s is a family business and it shows with the staff, and in how they treat their customers and how the customers view Jim’s. Earlier this year Jim’s Butcher Shop was going to close. When the locals heard they may be closing, the outcry of support was unbelievable. A letter “Save Jim’s” went viral. Within a few months the business was booming.

I asked Jim and Stacy about the support and love from the community. Stacy said her dad came to her and said we are gonna close the doors. She watched her dad for the next few weeks walking around as if he’d lost everything. Jim has been a butcher for 60 years. It’s what he has done (and done best!) his whole life. That’s when Stacy knew she had to do something. So began the “Save Jim’s” campaign…and the support, oh the support. They still get emotional about how the local Flat rock community came together and continue to support them.

Jim’s Butcher Shop… the local butcher, the local mom and pop store. It’s the place to get all your fresh meat, bread, beer, and so on. They do catering, they process deer and hunters love this!

Jim’s has weekly special, along with a new promotion, throwback Thursday. Check out their Facebook page to see all their promotions.

WELCOME TO FLAT ROCK

The first Euro-American settlers in Flat Rock were Michael Vreeland and his five grown sons between 1811 and 1820. Michael had been captured by British Rangers during the Revolutionary War and released after American independence.

The family purchased 800 acres (3.2 km2). The town was called the Village of Vreeland until 1838 when the Vreeland family sold off the majority of the land and relinquished control of the area. The Vreeland families built the first grain and lumber mill, having brought the grinding stones from New York.

Descendants of Michael Vreeland still live in the town and attend Flat Rock public schools, being the seventh generation to reside in the town their family founded.
