April 17, 2013 By Downtown Flat Rock

Children two and over can run and jump to their heart’s content every Friday at Toddler Gym Time at the Flat Rock Recreation Center.

Kids will be participating in many motor skill building activities. During the session there will be relay games and obstacle courses. Children will also have the opportunity to run, play duck-duck-goose and many other gym time games.

Class size is limited to 25 children, but there are still many openings available. Children can be registered during any time of the session, as long as there are still open spots. Toddler gym costs $25 for Flat Rock residents and $35 for non-residents. Two classes will be held every Friday from 5-6pm and 6:15-7:15pm.

The Rec Center is open Monday through Friday from 6am-10pm, Saturday from 8am-8pm, and Sunday from 9am-6pm. Passes start at $5 for residents and $8 for non-residents. The Rec Centers hosts a weight and fitness area, gym, track and pool.

WELCOME TO FLAT ROCK

The first Euro-American settlers in Flat Rock were Michael Vreeland and his five grown sons between 1811 and 1820. Michael had been captured by British Rangers during the Revolutionary War and released after American independence.

The family purchased 800 acres (3.2 km2). The town was called the Village of Vreeland until 1838 when the Vreeland family sold off the majority of the land and relinquished control of the area. The Vreeland families built the first grain and lumber mill, having brought the grinding stones from New York.

Descendants of Michael Vreeland still live in the town and attend Flat Rock public schools, being the seventh generation to reside in the town their family founded.
