Flat Rock Historical Society Honors our Veterans

November 10, 2013 By Joe Pagano

Flat Rock Historical Society-Smith Hotel Parlor
Flat Rock Historical Society-Smith Hotel Parlor

On Sunday November 10, 2013 during their monthly open house, the Flat Rock Historical Society decorated the Smith Hotel in a historical fashion.

Walter Smith’s  picture in uniform and parts of his WWII uniform was also on display.

The parlor, what we now call the front room, had a 1940 set up of a uniform, trunk and other era army necessities.

One of the bedrooms on the second level also has a uniform displayed.

The hotel was built in the late 1800’s and all of the furnishings are from that era.  Did you know that one of the bedrooms was converted into a doctor’s office in the early 1900’s?

There is a lot more history of downtown Flat Rock in the Smith Hotel.

The Flat Rock Historical Society has an open house every second Sunday from 1-4PM, free of charge, but donations are welcome.  You can visit the Historical Societies web page for more information on the monthly open houses or you can also call them for small gatherings at “Memory Lane”.

WELCOME TO FLAT ROCK

The first Euro-American settlers in Flat Rock were Michael Vreeland and his five grown sons between 1811 and 1820. Michael had been captured by British Rangers during the Revolutionary War and released after American independence.

The family purchased 800 acres (3.2 km2). The town was called the Village of Vreeland until 1838 when the Vreeland family sold off the majority of the land and relinquished control of the area. The Vreeland families built the first grain and lumber mill, having brought the grinding stones from New York.

Descendants of Michael Vreeland still live in the town and attend Flat Rock public schools, being the seventh generation to reside in the town their family founded.
