Planning Commission approves rezoning of Meijer site

May 24, 2013 By Downtown Flat Rock

On Tuesday, May 21st, the Planning Commission approved the rezoning of the land near Arsenal and Vreeland. This land is where Meijer has proposed building a 24/7 grocery store and a gas station.

The meeting took over three and half hours. According to Laura Gray, the Building Department Clerk and the Planning Commission Recorder, it took so long because they wanted “to address citizen concerns and questions.”

The final vote was six to one, with one member abstaining. This recommendation will go before City Council at the next month’s meeting. The final approval or rejection of Meijer will be decided at the June 3rd meeting.

If the building of Meijer at the current proposed site is rejected, the site will remain zoned residential, according to Gray.

Adopt a pet, save a life

May 22, 2013 By Downtown Flat Rock

Right now, there are two animals sitting at the Flat Rock animal shelter looking for their furever homes.

There is a beautiful gray cat waiting for you to take her home. She is about five years old and declawed. It is unknown if this beautiful lady is fixed. Unfortunately, she was turned in by her owners because of medical problems they couldn’t afford. It is completely unknown on what medical problems she is said to have. Her temperament with other animals, but she is a sweety with humans.

KittyFRAS

The second resident of the animal shelter is stray dog. If she is yours, please contact the police department immediately. She is an older lady, but still with a lot of life left. She came in very dirty and unkept looking. It is unknown if she is fixed or her temperament with other animals. But like the gray kitty, she is absolutely fabulous with humans.

The gray cat is already up for adoption. The dog is currently on hold as a stray dog, but will be available soon if she isn’t claimed. If you have enough room in your home and your heart, please consider adopting!

Call the police department at (734) 782-2496 for more information on adopting.

WELCOME TO FLAT ROCK

The first Euro-American settlers in Flat Rock were Michael Vreeland and his five grown sons between 1811 and 1820. Michael had been captured by British Rangers during the Revolutionary War and released after American independence.

The family purchased 800 acres (3.2 km2). The town was called the Village of Vreeland until 1838 when the Vreeland family sold off the majority of the land and relinquished control of the area. The Vreeland families built the first grain and lumber mill, having brought the grinding stones from New York.

Descendants of Michael Vreeland still live in the town and attend Flat Rock public schools, being the seventh generation to reside in the town their family founded.
