RE/MAX Masters – Flat Rock, Michigan

As we all know, 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone. We do know that RE/MAX Masters has refused to let this year put a damper on their spirits, or their business, as they celebrate the office’s twenty-five year anniversary in Flat Rock.

Doris started her real estate career with Mark Laboe in Monroe. After having her daughter, Lauri, she wanted something she could do part time while raising her family. Doris quickly realized she was quite good at real estate  After time, Doris realized she wanted to open her office. She and her husband, Tom built a home in Huron Township and she wanted the workplace to be close to home. In 1995, she bought a RE/MAX franchise and opened up on Telegraph Road, just north of Monroe County with the current Flat Rock location they are able to serve both Monroe and Down River. The location was perfect; Doris grew up in Trenton and her husband grew up in Monroe. Flat Rock put them right in the middle of both locations. It also allowed them to branch out to serve Western Wayne County and Ann Arbor.

Doris has seen 16% mortgage interest rates, automotive shutdowns and start-ups, new subdivisions, lack of housing, and, of course, the internet. They have seen sellers have short sales to get out from under debt because of job loss and stock market hits, to seeing sellers get more than they are asking for due to current housing shortage and everything in-between.

These obstacles have strengthened Doris. She and RE/MAX team set out to be better, to learn, and to grow. It shows –Doris and RE/MAX Masters have been honored in Crain’s Business as a top twenty-five company two times, they received recognition in HOUR Magazine, best in Detroit, as well as many other RE/MAX and Realtor awards over the years. Recently as broker and owner, it was an honor for Doris to be named the Wall Street Journal as one of the top thousand agents and recently received the Broker Owner of the Year Award from RE/MAX region. Lastly, but certainly not least, Doris received the RIS Media Lifetime Achievement Award in Washington DC as one of two hundred thirty agents in the entire USA. Doris is proud of all these achievements but is honored to have great agents who do their best every day to help meet the challenges of an ever changing market. Doris set out with a goal to become a successful agent/broker by providing an excellent service for her clients. Along the way, she has created a nationally recognized company with incredible agents who conduct the highest professional level for their clients.

So, while 2020 is challenging, overwhelming, and has changed the world, it is time where we are most appreciative of our agents, our family, friends and customers as well as our community support. They are already planning ways, and have the ability to continue their success story!

Here’s how we can help you with your home at this time:
– Design and Project Development Work continues and we are taking on new design and project development projects
– We’re now offering a virtual meeting option for remodeling consultations
– Today’s technology allows us to easily share images, drawings and material selections remotely and to conduct productive, purposeful meetings with the help of online meeting platforms
– We are encouraging homeowners to work on the project design and planning for their kitchen, bathroom, or whole house remodel now so that we’re able to move forward with your project in a timely manner – we are seeing some delays with some of our material supplies – so the sooner we get things selected/finalized, the better.

Flat Rock Our Hometown December featured business.

December 29, 2019 By Joe Pagano

Relax inside at Flat Rock’s Blue Heron Trading Co.

Blue Heron Trading Co. is a coffee, tea and specialty gourmet gift store, quickly becoming a community hangout for knitting clubs, book clubs, and church groups. Mark and Alisa Maul opened the business in September 2016, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony September 15, 2016 and just celebrated their third year at the business.
The Mauls have owned several businesses in the past, including operating a vegetable farm in California, a small nursery business, and interior design with silk plants for Ethan Allen Furniture. Alisa Maul said she previously had shot down her husband’s suggestion of buying the building on Huron River Drive because when she first saw it, it was “very dated” with 1970s-style wood paneling, a drop ceiling, linoleum, and residential rather than commercial doors and windows! However, after he suggested the location a second time and said he had a vision for it, she decided to trust him. The couple started by renovating two apartments above the store, followed by extensive remodeling to the rest of the building, including improving the look of the exterior and adding large front commercial picture windows for more light and to give it a store front look.
The Maul’s named the business after the Blue Heron because the birds are frequent visitors to the Flat Rock area. Alisa wanted the name to remind people of the proximity of the Huron River, where the birds make their home. “We decided to open the store to bring more ‘shop local’ opportunities to Flat Rock,” Maul said. “We carry a lot of items that you can’t find without driving to Plymouth, Northville or Ann Arbor,” he added further.
In addition to offering teas and coffee fresh roasted from their roaster, they also offer nitro coffee and cold brew which are customer favorites in the summer. Alisa and Mark also use a local favorite, Calder’s Ice Cream, for their frozen coffee drinks! The store also offers a large selection of gourmet foods, flavored oils, as well as, balsamic vinegar, soaps, lotions, and other gift items. The Blue Heron also offers a large selection of Cherry Republic candy, jams, and salsas, as well as Germack Nuts. They recently added Ann Arbor-based Zingerman’s candy!
Customers praise the locally roasted hot coffee and the specialty jams and jellies, with several mentioning they need to go back to pick up hot pepper bacon jam, which is the “best seller.” Blue Heron Trading Company has been growing steady since they opened three years ago. Their customers come from all over Downriver and beyond. Next year, Mark and Alisa plan to open our second location in the City of Trenton on Jefferson and West Avenue.
Alisa remarked, “People are looking for a place to relax and slowdown from the hustle and bustle of life,” visible in their lovely seating area with a cozy fireplace and leather couches, which Blue Heron customers love.
Blue Heron Trading Co. is located at:
26217 E. Huron River Drive in Flat Rock, MI.
Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday,
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday,
Sunday 12 to 4 p.m.
Come by and enjoy a wonderful visit and a great hot drink by the fireplace!

WELCOME TO FLAT ROCK

The first Euro-American settlers in Flat Rock were Michael Vreeland and his five grown sons between 1811 and 1820. Michael had been captured by British Rangers during the Revolutionary War and released after American independence.

The family purchased 800 acres (3.2 km2). The town was called the Village of Vreeland until 1838 when the Vreeland family sold off the majority of the land and relinquished control of the area. The Vreeland families built the first grain and lumber mill, having brought the grinding stones from New York.

Descendants of Michael Vreeland still live in the town and attend Flat Rock public schools, being the seventh generation to reside in the town their family founded.
