Flat Rock Farmers’ Market Now at Huroc Park

June 15, 2011 By Joe Pagano

The Farmers Market is NOW at Huroc Park Located at Gibraltar and Arsenal Roads; the Market will be at a new location in the clock tower parking lot across from Huroc Park starting today Saturday August 6th.  The Flat Rock Market is a “Made In Michigan” market. The market will remain across from Huroc Park through Mid-October and will have the same hours from 10 AM to 4 PM.   Shirley Moore from Wayne-Metropolitan Community Action Agency (Wayne-Metro) and the vendors feel that the park area is a better setting for the market because it is next to the senior center and will get more foot traffic from the park.  The Flat Rock DDA is sponsoring this event.  This weekend August 6th  market includes; Michigan Blueberries, Michigan Honey, fresh Michigan vegetables, Made in Michigan cookies Michigan Grown Pop Corn and pasta we have added a  live band and a bouncy for the children.  So stop by the park this Saturday between 10 AM and 4 PM and pick up some fresh picked, from the farm, fruits and vegetables, relax and listen to live entertainment while the little ones are having fun on the bouncy.  Huroc Park is great place to spend a day with friends and family walking on the non motorized path, fishing or a good old fashion picnic.  Please come back to the downtownflatrock.com web site for more information on the new vendors for August 13th.

WELCOME TO FLAT ROCK

The first Euro-American settlers in Flat Rock were Michael Vreeland and his five grown sons between 1811 and 1820. Michael had been captured by British Rangers during the Revolutionary War and released after American independence.

The family purchased 800 acres (3.2 km2). The town was called the Village of Vreeland until 1838 when the Vreeland family sold off the majority of the land and relinquished control of the area. The Vreeland families built the first grain and lumber mill, having brought the grinding stones from New York.

Descendants of Michael Vreeland still live in the town and attend Flat Rock public schools, being the seventh generation to reside in the town their family founded.
