Strands of Hair Salon Celebrates 25 Years

March 3, 2022 By Joe Pagano

Happy 25th Birthday to Flat Rock’s Strands of Hair Salon!
Ginny Sims opened her first location on Grosse Ile in 1979. After a few years, she moved Strands to Riverview where her daughter, Shayla Hopper, joined her. March 1, 1997 marks the day that Ginny opened the current location in one of the oldest buildings in Flat Rock at 26318 E Huron River Drive. Ginny fell in love with the historic building as well as the friendly community.
Having been home to various beauty salons and barbershops since the early 1900s, this charming building was a natural fit for Ginny, who cherished both the beauty and history of the structure. Ginny has always trained her staff to treat every customer with respect and make sure they feel and look great when they leave. Satisfied customers are the keystone of Strands. The standards and traditions that Ginny established are continued today under the ownership of her daughter, Shayla. While admittedly biased, Shayla said “ I have never met anyone who has cared more about her staff and clients than my mom. I have been in this business for 28 years and know she is unique.”
Ginny has been active in the community and, seeing a need for more activities for children in the town, started the Spooktacular, a neighborhood Halloween party opened to the community. It has grown to include more local businesses over the years and is now one of Flat Rock Our Hometown’s signature events. Shayla has continued that commitment to the community as a co-leader of Flat Rock Our Hometown, creating and presenting events in the downtown to promote and highlight local businesses.
The building was recently restored to its original historic design from the late 1800s. Shayla said “The building’s history has influenced us and we hope to live up to that history while maintaining our own originality”
Currently, Strands of Hair has a team of very talented hairstylists with individual specialties. Shayla, the owner and stylist, specializes in color, specialty cuts, and precision cuts. Renae, who has been with Strands for 12 years, specializes in clipper cuts and razor cuts. Melanie, who started as an apprentice 5 years ago, is talented and has a wealth of knowledge on cosmetics, as she is pursuing a degree in Pharmaceutical Cosmetic Formulation. She can answer questions about hair related chemistry and helps with strong product knowledge. June has been part of our team since 2019 and is exceptional with balayage and all blonding color. She strives to achieve exactly what her clients want.
For all who have been customers over the past 25 years, we thank you and look forward to our next 25 years.

Bobcean Funeral Home Flat Rock Our Hometown Featured Business

February 8, 2022 By Joe Pagano

The Bobcean Funeral Home has quite a long history with Flat Rock. For over 80 years, the Bobcean family has served the Flat Rock community through some of our most difficult times. On September 13, 2019, Bob Gilbert purchased the funeral home from the Bobcean family. Despite this change of ownership, the funeral home has been renamed Bobcean Funeral Home to continue to honor the family that has served our community for so long. Bob Gilbert admitted he was quite nervous about taking over a family business that had held such strong roots in the community. In the face of this new challenge, Bob leaned on the many years of obstacles and experiences he had working with families through the most trying of times. Bob hoped he could ultimately build the same strong community connection to Flat Rock the Bobcean’s had cultivated.
Bob knew at six years old he wanted to be a funeral director when his father passed away. At 16, he started working at a funeral home. By 18 years old, he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a Graves Registration Specialist. This role was a unique service that could be difficult, especially in a catastrophe, as Bob was responsible for identifying the deceased. As painful as it may seem, this service provided answers to those at home. This service has ultimately come to be helpful once again with the struggles we face in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Bob is a member of MIMORT, the Michigan Mortuary ResponseTeam, which assists local medical examiners through this ongoing pandemic and returning the deceased to their loved ones. Although this is such a challenging part of our current reality, Bob helps many community members have the support and closure they deserve.
Prior to taking over Bobcean’s, Bob was a partner in a Westland funeral homeand a general manager for a Livonia Funeral Home for many years. As many don’t want to think about end of life services, they truly are a part of life and shared by everyone. Bobcean has been a part of these challenging moments for many years for so many families. Bob came into the Flat Rock community and made the transition flawlessly. Bob has a way of making people feel comfortable, thoughtfully expressing the full life of each lost family member and communicating how important the mourning process is for each of us. He not only is a counselor to many, but truly helps guide families through very difficult times. In a time when so many things are often structured and rushed, Bob and the Bobcean tradition is not. They provide a service we all dread but can and is provided with sincere care and compassion, along with a guiding hand, at Bobcean’s. Bob takes great pride in and respect for his profession, which is seen in his devotion through his services.
As we embark into 2022, please know our community has many businesses that offer wonderful, caring services. Bobcean’s Funeral Home is one of them. Bob, his family, and associates are there to help with compassion, guidance and are a wonderful addition to our community.

WELCOME TO FLAT ROCK

The first Euro-American settlers in Flat Rock were Michael Vreeland and his five grown sons between 1811 and 1820. Michael had been captured by British Rangers during the Revolutionary War and released after American independence.

The family purchased 800 acres (3.2 km2). The town was called the Village of Vreeland until 1838 when the Vreeland family sold off the majority of the land and relinquished control of the area. The Vreeland families built the first grain and lumber mill, having brought the grinding stones from New York.

Descendants of Michael Vreeland still live in the town and attend Flat Rock public schools, being the seventh generation to reside in the town their family founded.
