Atwater Street Tacos September 2019 Flat Rock Our Hometown Featured Business

September 19, 2019 By Joe Pagano

Atwater Street Taco – Flat Rock Michigan

Monica and Gerardo have considered their interest in opening a restaurant as a unique and characteristic part of their eight year relationship. Starting out as a somewhat of a farfetched goal, Atwater Tacos came to be with their own efforts and a bit of spontaneity. The building on Atwater, long known as driving school, had recently gone up for sale when Monica and Gerardo decided to reach out to Bill Miller on its availability. After this initial call, everything seemed to fall into place resulting in the restaurant as we know it today. From its industrial aesthetic to the placement by the river, the dream that Monica and Gerardo long had all seemed to come together.
Atwater Street Tacos officially opened on October 26th of 2018, marking a major moment for both owners. Similarly to the uniqueness of the beginnings of Atwater, Monica and Gerardo feel their business is defined by the staff that has been with them since their very start. Monica expressed that they feel the running of the restaurant would be impossible without their committed and hardworking staff. The owners feel especially privileged to have their family working alongside them as part of their long time staff. The community atmosphere is further felt in the very recipes Gerardo uses for the Atwater menu. Strongly inspired from his own family recipes, Gerardo reflects on the cultural richness and personal connection they hold from his childhood in Mexico City.
In May of 2019, Atwater Street Tacos also expanded their business by becoming a franchise of Atwater (Motor City) Kayak. This pairing is important to note because you can get up to 10% off you tacos at the restaurant when you use Atwater Kayaks.

WELCOME TO FLAT ROCK

The first Euro-American settlers in Flat Rock were Michael Vreeland and his five grown sons between 1811 and 1820. Michael had been captured by British Rangers during the Revolutionary War and released after American independence.

The family purchased 800 acres (3.2 km2). The town was called the Village of Vreeland until 1838 when the Vreeland family sold off the majority of the land and relinquished control of the area. The Vreeland families built the first grain and lumber mill, having brought the grinding stones from New York.

Descendants of Michael Vreeland still live in the town and attend Flat Rock public schools, being the seventh generation to reside in the town their family founded.
