The Riverfest Committee and all the sponsors would like to thank everyone for supporting this year’s Riverfest.  This year’s Riverfest topped last year’s said a Flat Rock resident.  They enjoyed the family atmosphere especially the Kids Corner.  They also enjoyed the food and drink.  “With a three day event we can offer more things for our citizens” said Gary Borden, Riverfest chairman.  This year’s music lineup was also a hit.  Friday night brought rain but that didn’t dampen the spirits of the WAR MACHINE-KISS TRIBUTE BAND fans.  A few hundred stayed until the end.  But the rain did delay the Fireworks until Sunday night.

Saturday was the best day with sunshine and temperatures in the mid 70’s.  During the day the Kids Corner including games,

Rides, Fire Safety display and Mad Science were all free and highly attended.  The Monster Truck continues to be a fan favorite running on the south side of Huroc Park.  The Saturday night entertainment was also highly attended including Alexander Zonjic with the Motor City Horns and the Contours with Sylvester Potts.  Hundreds were dancing to the Motown Sound.

WELCOME TO FLAT ROCK

The first Euro-American settlers in Flat Rock were Michael Vreeland and his five grown sons between 1811 and 1820. Michael had been captured by British Rangers during the Revolutionary War and released after American independence.

The family purchased 800 acres (3.2 km2). The town was called the Village of Vreeland until 1838 when the Vreeland family sold off the majority of the land and relinquished control of the area. The Vreeland families built the first grain and lumber mill, having brought the grinding stones from New York.

Descendants of Michael Vreeland still live in the town and attend Flat Rock public schools, being the seventh generation to reside in the town their family founded.
